Breakthrough Infections – COVID-19: An Update
Breakthrough infection refers to cases in which a person completely vaccinated against COVID-19 nonetheless becomes infected with the virus. A person is considered to be completely vaccinated if they have completed at least 15 days post the second dose of the vaccine.
Suburban Diagnostics had conducted a study over the period of 2 months (June 2021 and July 2021) and found that 0.96 % of completely vaccinated people tested at Suburban Diagnostics had breakthrough infections.
As a follow-up, we conducted the same study again for the month of September 2021 and found the incidence of breakthrough infections among completely vaccinated individuals had increased to 6.2%. 87.5% of these cases were in people above the age of 40.
