Be Aware About Zika Virus and Act with Care

  • World Health Organization has raised concerns over the safety of all players and visitors expected to be in Brazil for the Olympics.

  • Estimated 1 million individuals have been infected by Zika virus, transmitted by mosquitoes Aedes aegypti.
  • This Virus has also spread to other western countries and pacific region.
  • Only ~20% infected individuals become symptomatic (fever with maculopapular rash, muscle/joint pain, painful red eyes and headache) lasting for several days to a week.
  • Pregnant women have the worst consequences: as children born to infected mothers are known to suffer from severe brain defects (microcephaly – small sized heads) and other neurological problems.
  • The Centre of Disease Control has also advised men to refrain sexual activities for at least 6 months after returning from countries with high prevalence of Zika virus infection.
