{"id":2186,"date":"2024-12-06T05:12:36","date_gmt":"2024-12-06T05:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/suburban-blog.abymtech.com\/?p=2186"},"modified":"2025-03-05T10:18:43","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T10:18:43","slug":"coinfection-in-mosquito-borne-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.suburbandiagnostics.com\/blog\/coinfection-in-mosquito-borne-diseases\/","title":{"rendered":"Coinfection in Mosquito Borne Diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2209\" src=\"https:\/\/suburbandiagnostics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Coinfection-in-Mosquito-Borne-Diseases-300x180.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1250\" height=\"750\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.suburbandiagnostics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Coinfection-in-Mosquito-Borne-Diseases-300x180.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.suburbandiagnostics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Coinfection-in-Mosquito-Borne-Diseases-768x461.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.suburbandiagnostics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Coinfection-in-Mosquito-Borne-Diseases.webp 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1250px) 100vw, 1250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mosquitoes may be the deadliest killer of man in history, primarily due to their ability to transmit a wide variety of diseases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is not uncommon to find cases of people infected with one mosquito-borne disease, co-infection with 2 or more mosquito-borne diseases is rare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to understand how common such co-infections can be, Suburban Diagnostics\u2019 conducted a retrospective analysis of 3,500+ cases of people who were tested for Chikungunya, Dengue and Malaria over the past 5 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We found that overall co-infection rate was <b>0.25%<\/b> of the co-infection cases having:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>66.7% cases with a co-infection of Dengue and Chikungunya<\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\">22.2% cases with a co-infection between Dengue and Malaria<\/td>\n<td>11.1% cases with a co-infection between Chikungunya and Malaria<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">77.8% were male<\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\">22.2% were female<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"4\">Ages ranged from 2 yrs \u2013 75 yrs<\/p>\n<p>(Median age: 35 yrs)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, 33.3% of cases were those with co-infection between diseases transmitted by <b>2 different species of mosquitoes<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incidentally, all the cases of malaria were of Plasmodium vivax species.
