{"id":2172,"date":"2024-12-06T04:48:03","date_gmt":"2024-12-06T04:48:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/suburban-blog.abymtech.com\/?p=2172"},"modified":"2025-03-05T10:15:33","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T10:15:33","slug":"trends-in-drug-resistant-tb-6-year-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.suburbandiagnostics.com\/blog\/trends-in-drug-resistant-tb-6-year-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Trends in Drug-Resistant TB A 6-Year Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2173\" src=\"https:\/\/suburbandiagnostics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Trends-in-Drug-Resistant-TB-A-6-Year-Study-300x180.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1342\" height=\"805\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.suburbandiagnostics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Trends-in-Drug-Resistant-TB-A-6-Year-Study-300x180.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.suburbandiagnostics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Trends-in-Drug-Resistant-TB-A-6-Year-Study-768x461.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.suburbandiagnostics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Trends-in-Drug-Resistant-TB-A-6-Year-Study.webp 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1342px) 100vw, 1342px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death from a single infectious disease agent and the leading cause of death among persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 27% of the global TB cases are from India.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest challenges in treating tuberculosis is the rising rate of drug resistance in the 1st and 2nd line drugs and pose a serious threat to the #EndTB initiative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Mono-resistant TB: <\/b>Resistant to a single first-line anti-TB drug (isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, or pyrazinamide).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB)<\/b>: Resistant to at least rifampicin and isoniazid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB)<\/b>: Resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin, plus any fluoroquinolone and at least one of three injectable second-line drugs (i.e., amikacin, kanamycin, or capreomycin).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suburban Diagnostics conducted a <b>6-year study <\/b>on <b>positive TB culture samples<\/b> to understand the profile of drug resistance between the years 2015 and 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Mono-resistant TB<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The combined rates of mono-resistant TB (resistant to ONLY a single 1st line drug) seem to be on the rise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, the 7-year rate of mono-resistant TB: <b>5.3%<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common 1st line drugs for which mono-resistance was seen were pyrazinamide and INH.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>MDR-TB<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, the 7-year rate of MDR-TB: <b>35.7%<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We found the rates of MDR-TB have been decreasing over the years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>XDR-TB<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, the 7-year rate of XDR-TB: <b>3.4%<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>10.6% of MDR cases were also XDR.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We found the rates of XDR-TB have been decreasing since a peak in 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>UPDATED XDR-TB DEFINITION<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WHO updated the definition of XDR-TB in 2021.
