This overreaction of the body\u2019s immune system is known as an allergic reaction and the substances that cause it are called allergens.<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the winter when one tends to spend more time inside, you may notice allergy symptoms increase, especially if you are allergic to common indoor allergens:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Dust mites<\/li>\n<li>Mold<\/li>\n<li>Animal dander\/saliva<\/li>\n<li>Cockroaches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy symptoms can be:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li><b><strong>Mild<\/strong><\/b>&#8211; rash, itching, watery eyes, congestion<\/li>\n<li><b><strong>Moderate<\/strong><\/b>&#8211; itchiness, difficulty in breathing<\/li>\n<li><b><strong>Severe<\/strong><\/b>&#8211; varying degrees of swellings that can make breathing and swallowing difficult, abdominal pain, cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea, mental confusion or dizziness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe allergies may result in life-threatening reactions called anaphylaxis \u2013 which if untreated can lead to death.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>\u00a0How do you differentiate it from a cold\/flu?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cold usually doesn&#8217;t last for more than 10 days. Allergies can linger for weeks or even months. Also, colds and flu sometimes have a fever and aches and pains, which don\u2019t usually happen with allergies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<b>The things that you are allergic to, really add up!<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are allergic to dust mites, that might not be the only reason you are sneezing, and if you have asthma that might not be the only reason you are wheezing. It may be because you are sensitive to <b>more than one allergen.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>\u00a0Allergic March<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergies often begin early in life, first expressing themselves as eczema in young children. The progression from eczema to later developing food allergies, allergic rhinitis and asthma is called the \u2018Allergic March\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<b>Should you do an allergy test?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All patients with recurrent or persistent \u201callergy-like\u201d symptoms should get tested. Correctly identifying the allergen can help:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Reduce exposure<\/li>\n<li>Reduce inflammation<\/li>\n<li>Reduce symptoms<\/li>\n<li>Reduce the need for medication<\/li>\n<li>Improve the patient\u2019s quality-of-life<\/li>\n<li>Help the patient receive allergy specific treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Why should you prefer a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suburbandiagnostics.com\/healthcare\/book-a-blood-test\">blood test<\/a> for allergies (ImmunoCAP) over the skin prick test?<\/b><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Blood test for allergies (ImmunoCAP)<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>Skin prick test<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>The blood sample can be collected anywhere, even at home.<\/td>\n<td>Can be done only in a doctor\u2019s clinic or hospital.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>The blood tests provide results with little to no risk \u2013 hence it is a safer option for those who are at higher risk for a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction, as well as for those with unstable heart disease or asthma.<\/td>\n<td>A skin prick test for allergies provides quick results but is more risky as compared to a blood test.
