Osteoporosis is a bone defect caused by the deterioration of the bone tissues. Osteoporosis causes the bones to lose their mineral density (become fragile) to an extent where even a minor fall or bump may result in a fracture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Risk factors for osteoporosis:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Sedentary lifestyle<\/li>\n<li>Smoking or drinking<\/li>\n<li>Early menopause<\/li>\n<li>Underweight\/ reduced nutritional content<\/li>\n<li>Family history of osteoporosis<\/li>\n<li>Increased fractures after 50 years of age<\/li>\n<li>Loss of height or stooped posture<\/li>\n<li>Conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, or digestive ailments<\/li>\n<li>Excessive use of steroids \u2013 glucocorticoids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Bone mineral density testing:<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bone mineral density (BMD) test, detects whether you have osteoporosis. The test is <b>painless and quick<\/b>. It estimates how dense or thick your bones are by using x-rays.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Reduced bone density in men and women:<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suburban Diagnostics conducted a study on 4,500+ adults who had their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suburbandiagnostics.com\/Test-Menu\/BMD-Bone-Mineral-Density--Total-Body\">BMD test<\/a> done over the past 6 years. Our findings are shown in the two graphs below:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, both men and women have reduced bone density as early as in their 30s. A higher proportion of men had low bone density in the 30-39 and 40-49 age groups compared to females in the same age groups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vast majority of women experienced a significant drop in bone density post their 40s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tips for healthy bones:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Be proactive and <b><strong>get tested for bone density<\/strong><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Make your diet rich in nutrients that keep your bones healthy<\/li>\n<li>Ensure consumption of vitamin D, calcium, and proteins for improving bone health<\/li>\n<li>Engage in regular exercises like muscle-strengthening, balance training, and weight-bearing<\/li>\n<li>Maintain a healthy weight<\/li>\n<li>Quit sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and drinking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Males are just as (if not more) susceptible as females for osteoporosis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Osteoporosis can be seen even in the 30s and 40s age groups, not just in the elderly.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Osteoporosis and broken bones impart serious health concerns with their debilitating pain and disabilities.
