{"id":1985,"date":"2024-12-05T04:41:42","date_gmt":"2024-12-05T04:41:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/suburban-blog.abymtech.com\/?p=1985"},"modified":"2025-03-05T06:37:03","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T06:37:03","slug":"international-womens-day-breast-cervical-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.suburbandiagnostics.com\/blog\/international-womens-day-breast-cervical-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"International Women&#8217;s Day: Breast &#038; Cervical Cancer Awareness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1994\" src=\"https:\/\/suburbandiagnostics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/International-Womens-Day-Breast-Cervical-Cancer-Awareness-300x180.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1726\" height=\"302\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Indian women.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cervical cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in Indian women.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together, breast and cervical cancer account for approximately 40% of all cancer deaths in India.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><u><b><strong>BREAST CANCER<\/strong><\/b><\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the breast and may spread elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast cancer is mostly seen in women but can rarely be seen in men.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><strong>Symptoms\/warning signs of breast cancer:<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit).<\/li>\n<li>Thickening or swelling of part of the breast.<\/li>\n<li>Irritation or dimpling of breast skin.<\/li>\n<li>Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast.<\/li>\n<li>Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area.<\/li>\n<li>Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood.<\/li>\n<li>Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.<\/li>\n<li>Pain in any area of the breast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><strong>Like all cancers, it is best to detect breast cancer early and proven methods of screening exist which can help detect it very early.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Screening for breast cancer:<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><strong>Breast self-examination: <\/strong><\/b>A simple and easy procedure which can be done at home.<\/li>\n<li><b><strong>Clinical breast examination: <\/strong><\/b>This is the examination of the breast by a trained healthcare professional.<\/li>\n<li><b><strong>Mammography: <\/strong><\/b>Women who have regular mammograms are more likely to have breast cancer found early and more likely to have good treatment outcomes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Importance of breast cancer screening:<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even though treatments have come a long way, early detection is still the best way to ensure a positive outcome. And early detection comes with screening.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The American Cancer Society recommends that breast cancer screening for women without any family history must start at the age of 40 years:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women between 40 and 44 years have the option to start screening with a mammogram every year.<\/li>\n<li>Women between 45 to 54 years should get mammograms every year.<\/li>\n<li>Women between 55 years and older can switch to a mammogram every other year, or they can choose to continue yearly mammograms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u><b><strong>CERVICAL CANCER<\/strong><\/b><\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cervical cancer is a type of cancer affecting the cervix which is the lowest portion of the uterus.<\/li>\n<li>This cancer is caused by the <b><strong>human papillomavirus (HPV)<\/strong><\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><strong>Symptoms\/warning signs of cervical cancer:<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Early on, cervical cancer may not cause signs and symptoms.<\/li>\n<li>Advanced cervical cancer may cause bleeding or discharge from the vagina that is not normal for you, such as bleeding after sex.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Screening for cervical cancer:<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>There are 3 major modalities for cervical cancer screening:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HPV DNA testing<\/li>\n<li>Cytology (also known as a PAP smear)<\/li>\n<li>Co-testing (this is a combination of HPV DNA testing and cytology)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><strong>There are also 2 types of cytology testing:<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conventional PAP smear<\/li>\n<li>Liquid-based cytology (LBC)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of the two, <b><strong>liquid-based cytology is superior to conventional PAP smear.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>Cervical Screening Guidelines By The American College of Gynecologists<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Age<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>Modality of screening<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>Recommended screening interval<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td rowspan=\"3\"><b>21 to 29 years<\/b><\/td>\n<td>HPV DNA testing<\/td>\n<td rowspan=\"2\">Not recommended in this age group<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Co-testing<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Cytology<\/td>\n<td>Every 3 years<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td rowspan=\"3\"><b>30 to 65 years<\/b><\/td>\n<td>HPV DNA testing<\/td>\n<td rowspan=\"2\">Every 5 years<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Co-testing<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Cytology<\/td>\n<td>Every 3 years<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><strong>After the age of 65 years:<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><strong>When to test:<\/strong><\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>If you have not had any screening done before the age of 65 years.<\/li>\n<li>If you are immunocompromised.<\/li>\n<li>If you have a history of cervical cancer or high-grade precancerous lesions in the past.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b><strong>When not to test:<\/strong><\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>If you have an adequate negative screening history (at least 2 consecutive co-testing screenings or consecutive negative cytology screenings in the past 10 years).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><strong>HPV vaccinations:<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vaccines against HPV are also available.<\/li>\n<li>Even though the recommended age for vaccination is less than 14 years, the vaccine can be given to women up to the age of 26 years.<\/li>\n<li>However, women who have been vaccinated should still undergo screening.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><strong>The risk is not knowing.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><strong>This women&#8217;s day, make your health a priority!<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Indian women.
