In response, your immune system triggers cells to release an antibody known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) to neutralize the allergy-causing food.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>SYMPTOMS<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The severity of the allergic reaction to a food item can vary widely from person to person.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>For some people, an allergic reaction may be uncomfortable but not severe.<\/li>\n<li>For others, an allergic food reaction can be frightening and even life-threatening.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food allergy symptoms usually develop within a <b>few minutes<\/b> to <b>2 hours<\/b> after eating the offending food.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common food allergy signs and symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Tingling or itching in the mouth<\/li>\n<li>Hives, itching or eczema<\/li>\n<li>Swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat or other parts of the body<\/li>\n<li>Wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness, light headedness or fainting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some people, a food allergy can trigger a severe reaction called ANAPHYLAXIS. The symptoms of this life-threatening reaction include:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Constriction and tightening of the airways<\/li>\n<li>A swollen throat or the sensation of a lump in your throat that makes it difficult to breathe<\/li>\n<li>Shock with a severe drop in blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Rapid pulse<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness, lightheadedness or loss of consciousness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency \u2013 if untreated, it can cause a coma or even death.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>IS FOOD ALLERGY THE SAME THING AS FOOD INTOLERANCE?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NO!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A true food allergy affects the immune system. Even small amounts of the offending food can trigger a range of symptoms, which can be severe or life-threatening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a food intolerance often affects only the digestive system and causes less serious symptoms.
